Storm season is starting: what to check around the house now
On Tenerife water isn't a problem until it is: it arrives one afternoon, comes down all at once and finds its way in where nobody expected. These are the months when it happens, and almost everything that prevents trouble is done beforehand, not after.
What we see most often in the office
The claims that reach us after a storm repeat themselves: blocked roof drains, awnings torn out by the wind, terrace furniture that ends up against a window, and water coming in through a window that hadn't closed properly for a while. Hardly any of it is a disaster. Almost all of it could have been avoided with half an hour of work beforehand.
Three concrete things before the first warning
Clear the drains on the roof and terrace — leaves, calima sand and old flowerpots are what blocks them. Put away or tie down anything the wind can move. And check that doors and windows really close, especially the sliding terrace doors, which go out of true over the years.
If it has already happened: photos before you clear up
This is the most expensive mistake and the most understandable one. You walk in, see the mess and start drying. Take photos first, with the water still there, and of the spot where it came in. Otherwise the loss adjuster arrives to a clean flat and has to take your word for it.
What your policy covers isn't the same as what falls from the sky
One distinction is worth knowing before you need it: damage from extraordinary natural events is paid by the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros, not directly by your insurer — and only if your policy is in force. Everything else, water through a loose roof tile or the awning, goes through your home insurance. If you're not sure what you have, tell us and we'll go through it with you. It costs nothing and takes five minutes.
What this means for you
- Clear roof and terrace drains before the first heavy rain.
- When wind is forecast, put away or tie down awnings, parasols and garden furniture.
- If water gets in: photos before you dry anything — including where it came in.
- Keep receipts for whatever is damaged. Without them the assessment drags on.
- Tell us the same day. A claim can be opened even if the extent isn't clear yet.
- If you're unsure what your policy covers, ask us before you need it.
