Flying from the Canaries with children: what always gets forgotten
Flying from here to the mainland or to northern Europe with children has one part that prepares itself and one that always gets forgotten. The first is the suitcase. The second is the paperwork — and what happens when something goes wrong two thousand kilometres from home.
The documents, in good time
Children need their own ID, inside the EU as well — being listed in a parent's document isn't accepted anywhere any more. Check the expiry dates now, not the week before: renewal appointments fill up in December precisely. If the child travels with only one parent or with grandparents, ask in advance whether a travel authorisation will be required.
The European health card is not travel insurance
It's worth having, it's free, and it covers public healthcare in the destination country. What it doesn't cover: repatriation, private clinics, a missed flight, or a suitcase that never arrives. That's where travel insurance starts — and where most people realise they didn't have any.
What gets claimed most with small children
It's rarely the serious accident. It's the ear infection on day two, the fever that delays the flight home, the cancelled flight with a hotel night in between, and the pushchair that arrives broken. Small things that, one after another, make the trip expensive.
